Sarah Musgrove and Erika Singal are WISE LA’s Vice Presidents of Programming. Thanks to their efforts, WISE LA has a calendar full of inspiring and engaging events for its members. We sat down with these ladies to get an idea of how they have made such successful careers in the sports business.

Sarah Musgrove, Senior Production Director, On Board Experiential

Since 2014, Sarah has worked for On Board Experiential as a Senior Production Director. After moving to Portland, OR to support OBE in opening an office near Nike WHQ, she returned to LA in 2016 to manage the LA-based production team and produce events for brands based in Southern California.

What was one pivotal moment in your career that has led you to where you are today?

Earlier in my career, I was incredibly unhappy at an agency where management and I did not share similar values. After a hard week I called my dad, and he simply said, “Sarah, life is too short and you are too young to be unhappy. Quit and start freelancing until you find the right place for you.” The decision has led me to work with a myriad of different agencies, producing events for a variety of different brands and ultimately starting my own LLC and S-Corp. This experience gave me an “on the job MBA” of sorts!

What are some of the professional goals you hope to still reach one day?

I hope to work for a brand who is making a significant impact on the lives of the underprivileged in the United States. I want to contribute to this change and move the needle in a drastic way.

(I also hope to have a role in making the 2028 Olympics the best to date!)

How has WISE LA helped you along in this journey?

Shelley Taniguchi (President of WISE LA) pulled me into the organization when I graduated from Loyola Marymount University, and I have been grateful ever since. WISE LA has introduced me to a group of women who has inspired and challenged me.

What are you passionate about in your free time?

I spend a lot of my free time serving on the WISE board. When I am not doing that, I love to read and cook. I am happiest when I have a glass of wine in my hand, a group of friends, and a meal to share.

What is a book you read recently that you would recommend?

Tim Ferriss’ Tools of Titans. It is hefty read, but it is broken into small profiles of high performers. On any given day you can read two pages that will change the lens of which approach your next task.

If you could grab lunch with any famous woman from history, who would it be?

Eleanor Roosevelt

What sports team do you root for and why?

A controversial answer after recent news, but The University of Arizona Men’s Basketball team. My grandfather was the basketball manager in the 50’s and he taught me to love the Wildcats.

If you could swap careers with any woman in the world for a day, who would it be?

Oprah Winfrey. I would love to see what a day in her life is like. Who I would meet? What would the conversation be?

Erika Singal, Senior Director, Corporate Partnerships, Los Angeles Lakers

Erika is another WISE LA member who began her career in an untraditional field (investment banking) only to end up in sports. After five years in this industry, she went back to pursue her MBA, a path which helped her transition into sports. Erika has recently rejoined the corporate world with a brand-new role at the LA Lakers, after taking a year and a half off to raise her children. As the Senior Director of Corporate Partnerships, she works to bring in new strategic partners and develop effective marketing strategies for partners by leveraging all of the organization’s various assets.

What was one pivotal moment in your career that has led you to where you are today?

Serving on the WISE board. Hands down, that is the best professional step I took, post-investment banking days, to get me to where I am today. Put the networking aside, the professional growth I have experienced from working on this board, with such talented individuals, has been instrumental in my development as a professional.

What are some of the professional goals you hope to still reach one day?

I would love to be in a position where I can directly impact the working environment for many individuals. I have been fortunate to have worked for bosses that created wonderful working environments, which allowed me to not only enjoy my job, but also the people with whom I worked.  Given the number of hours we spend working together, I feel strongly that the environment should be one of enjoyment. Productivity and great work will follow.

How has WISE LA helped you along in this journey?

WISE has allowed me to give back to a community that has been pivotal in my development as a professional. Feeling purposefully connected to the sports industry has provided additional context for me professionally, which has been helpful in my professional journey.

What are you passionate about in your free time?

Spending time with my kids and family. They bring me joy and purpose to my everyday life. I also feel passionate about leading a healthy lifestyle, and have found yoga to be instrumental in both my physical and mental health.

What is a book you read recently that you would recommend?

Let People Go Surfing by Yvon Chouinard (Founder of Patagonia). Amazing story about how treating individuals with respect and kindness can lead to happiness and significant professional satisfaction.

If you could grab lunch with any famous woman from history, who would it be?

Oh man, this is so tough. I don’t think I could pick just one….

What sports team do you root for and why?

The Los Angeles Lakers… Need I say why…

If you could swap careers with any woman in the world for a day, who would it be?

I guess I would have to say Sheryl Sandberg. The rate at which Silicon Valley and Facebook moves is incredible and I would enjoy being challenged by all the very smart people that surround her in that role. I think it is important to understand the Facebook business in this increasingly rapidly changing world. Perhaps one day in Sheryl’s role would give me a slight peek into how some of the magic that happens there is built.
